3. Directions: If there are contractions in the sentence, the students should rewrite the sentence with the contraction broken apart before they begin diagramming. Example: The clown wont smile. The clown will not smile. Give them a few minutes to do it by themselves, then they will trade and check someone elses paper. Diagram each one and discuss under the doc camera. I left an answer key for you.I usually choose one child for each sentence to explain how they diagrammed it. Ask them what part of speech each word is. They should know these. They can use the posters on the wall to help them.
