Slide4Relevant RCWsAssault, RCW Chapter 9A.36 4 th  Degree: An assault is an intentional touching of another person that is harmful or offensive, regardless of whether an physical injury is done to the person. Touching is offensive if it would offend an ordinary person who is not unduly sensitive. This is the definition a jury would get in a trial.

Slide5Additional Types of AssaultAssault 1 st : Inflicts or intends to inflict Great  bodily harm, or with a deadly weapon. Assault 2 nd : Inflicts or intends to inflict Substantial  bodily harm (broken bone), strangulation. Assault 3 rd : Not amounting to 1 st  or 2 nd Degree.  Causes bodily harm accompanied by substantial pain that extends for a period of time to inflict suffering.

Slide6Stalking, RCW 9A.46.110(1) A person commits the crime of stalking if:      (a) He or she intentionally and repeatedly harasses or repeatedly follows another person; and      (b) The person being harassed or followed is placed in fear that the stalker intends to injure the person, another person, or property of the person or of another person. The feeling of fear must be one that a reasonable person in the same situation  would experience under all the circumstances; and (c) The stalker either: (i) Intends to frighten, intimidate, or harass the person; or (ii) Knows or reasonably should know that the person is afraid, intimidated, or harassed even if the stalker did not intend to place the person in fear or intimidate or harass the person.     

Slide7Harassment: 9A.46.0201) A person is guilty of harassment if:      (a) Without lawful authority, the person knowingly threatens:      (i) To cause bodily injury immediately or in the future to the person threatened or to any other person; or      (ii) To cause physical damage to the property of a person other than the actor; or      (iii) To subject the person threatened or any other person to physical confinement or restraint; or      (iv) Maliciously to do any other act which is intended to substantially harm the person threatened or another with respect to his or her physical or mental health or safety; and      (b) The person by words or conduct places the person threatened in reasonable fear that the threat will be carried out. "Words or conduct" includes, in addition to any other form of communication or conduct, the sending of an electronic communication.

Slide8Sex Offenses Related to TeensChild Rape 3 rd  Degree (9A.44.079)  A person is guilty if they have  sexual intercourse  with another who is at least 14 but less than 16. The perpetrator must be a least 48 months older than the victim. Child Molestation 3 rd  Degree (9A.44.089) Sexual contact  with another who is at least 14 but less than 16.  The perpetrator must be a least 48 months older than the victim.

Slide11Victim Ortralla Mosley, age 15Ortralla broke up with her sophomore boyfriend Marcus McTear on March 26, 2003 at Reagan High School in Austin, TX.  The next day she told teachers that Marcus was, ‘becoming increasingly violent with her and she was worried about her safety.’  Two hours later McTear stabbed her in the hallway of the school. Sentenced to 40 years for Murder.

Slide12Warning signs with McTearIn a past relationship McTear began telling his girlfriend what to do and what to wear. Physical abuse included:  biting her cheek, punched her arm & pushing her down the stairs at school. Also set her backpack on fire. He said he’d commit suicide if she left him. She had to change schools to escape his constant harassment.

Slide14StatisticsOne in five 13-14 year olds in relationships say they know friends and peers who have been struck in anger by a boyfriend or girlfriend. 69% of all teens who had sex by age 14 said they have gone through one or more types of abuse in a relationship. 38% of date rape victims are between the ages or 14 and 17.

Slide15Abusive relationship warning signsAre you afraid to break up? Partner makes sexually degrading remarks about you. Tells you where to go, what to wear & who to talk to. Partner was abusive to a former girl or boyfriend. Says that no one else would date you. Is he/she jealous? Checking up on you or accuse you of cheating. Partner has two personalities      (calm vs. nasty) Does he/she call you names? Throw things at or near you? Partner’s behavior sometimes scares you (examples: temper, driving, threats, irrationality)

Slide16Suicide over SextingJessica Logan, 18, committed suicide one month after high school graduation. She was taunted relentlessly for a nude photograph she sent, it was meant for her boyfriend only. Photo was sent to hundreds of teens and adults in the Cincinnati area.

Slide17SextingAP-MTV poll of 14-24 year olds in 2009 found that 1 in 4 admitted to sexting. Recently teens have been prosecuted for taking, possession and distributing nude pictures of minors. Including 3 teens charged in 2010 in Thurston Co. who forwarded a cell phone picture of a nude 14 year old.  Ex-boyfriend sent it to two other girls who then forwarded to numerous teens.

Slide18What can someone do if they think theirfriend is in an abusive relationship? Do not ignore warning signs. Talk to your friend about your concerns. Do not judge.  Respect their privacy and don’t put them in danger by spreading rumors or gossip. Encourage them to talk to an adult who understands abusive relationships.  Offer to go with them. Do not try to mediate.  Keep yourself safe too. If they refuse your help, don’t take it personally. Be supportive-it may take a few tries to really break it off with someone.

Slide19Healthy RelationshipsBoth people feel accepted and valued. Each should respect the other’s opinions and boundaries. Trust is a part of the relationship and is modeled by supporting the other person’s independent activities and friendships. Being near your partner does not cause fear of humiliation, degradation or physical violence.
