  3. IHEP & CERN GSE status: 1) Scaffolding, 2) Rotating Assembly (&Test-beam) Stand, 3) Thermal vacuum Test Stand Scaffolding Status Manufacturing drawings Completed (thanks to Dr. Z. Zhang and The IHEP team: Prof. Hesheng Chen, Prof. Y.Lu,. H.Zhuang) CERN safety will review the design end of this month (next week). Material procurement and Manufacture is set to begin Nov 1!   4. Rotating Assembly Stand (RAS) Status: RAS CAD model 90% complete. Large Structural beams made of Stainless steel or aluminum are difficult to procure. Z.Zhang will provide profiles available in China, Upon which the final structural design can be calculated and design will be complete. Still have choice of rotation and lifting mechanisms Gears selected & can be ordered After collaboration chooses. (from European vendors) R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005

Nabtesco’s • Cyclidal gear head driven by a small motorized worm gear will allow rotations with 5 arcmin precision • AMS rotation speed less than 1rpm • Worm gear inherently locks when the worm gear is stopped • Motor has an emergency e-stop as a second stopping mechanism • Requires adapter plate to fit worm gear with cycloidal gear R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005

  8. Bonfiglioli’s Planetary gear: • Cheaper alternative • Can be installed off the shelf • Precision +/- 2 degrees • (commonly used in cranes and cement mixers..) • Needs both E-stop for the motor • And another mechanical braking device R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005

  9. For the Test-beam: Vertical displacement: Do we need very precise continuous positioning? (Power screw with servo motor) Or are a few set vertical positions ok? (then we can lift manually by cranking the power screw or lift via crane and pin roll block into position) Lateral translation & Vertical axis Rotation: Currently the plan is to lift AMS via air cushions and then translate or rotate. To avoid inaccuracy due to float, it is recommended to position AMS and then set it down by turning the air cushions off. Is this ok for Test beam data taking? R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005

RAS Remaining work: Final profiles need to be selected to finalize calculations Calculations need to be reviewed and OK’d by JS, NASA, and CERN After official OK, IHEP will produce manufacturing drawings, procure materials, manufacture, assemble and test Design test beam structure! AMS Mass simulator for the RAS: IHEP Plans to build an AMS Mass simulator to test the stands structure and rotating capabilities. AMS mechanical info to accomplish this have been furnished: (AMS’s shuttle interface and trunion drawings, weight, CG, and Moment of inertia) Z.Zhang, supported by the IHEP team are designing this now.   12. Assembly Plan: What Procedures and Documentation do we need for Assembly? According to NASA & JS recommendation: (thanks! C.Tutt, T.Martin) 1) Assembly Plan:(for the management –coordinator for AMS assembly) Overview of the assembly process: The purpose of which is to: 1) Define what hardware, tools, & GSE 2) Define Logistics: Space, people, what time required for each step.   13. 2) Build Book:(for the hands-on physicists, engineers, and technicians, assembling AMS hardware) • 1) A detailed assembly procedure including what exact items are assembled, with what tools and materials, at what specifications. • Critical steps and specifications met will have sign-off sheets! • (e.g.. screw torques and back-off prevention) (so we know who to blame later) • The build book is the “Nuts and bolts” detailed procedure!   14. 3) Quality Assurance Plan: (For the DETECTOR RESPONSIBLE, floor manager, and persons assembling hardware) Description of what we will do to verify that assembly is/was done correctly using correct hardware, materials, & procedure. (Trent will review the QA plan in detail) 1) Basic procedure (critical steps) 2) Verification (a person to check/double check –example: screw torques.) 3) Validation (detector/subsystem testing) 4) Safety Plan: (for persons assembling hardware & Floor/shift manager) Description of what we are doing to insure worker and hardware safety 1) Description of Specific hazardous operation & instructions (not to stand next to cryogenic vent during magnet charge) 2) General safety procedures continually in place (wear your goggles etc..) It may be practical to combine QA and Safety plans such that we are constantly reminded of safety along the way! R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005

Next Steps: • From the “Assembly List”: • Convert Assembly list into a Build book template & have subgroups fill in more details, sign off sheets etc. • 2) Generate Assembly and QA Plan together With NASA & JS • (T.Martin, C.Tutt J.Heilig) • Obtain CERN safety Documentation from which to begin safety plan. • Coordinate & Assign individuals/ responsibles to write sections by a set due Date! • CERN Integration can not write all the documents alone! • Makes sense to have the Build Book, Assembly plan, and QA written by the persons who will DO the work or require the info during assembly R.Becker (MIT) October 24, 2005
