Slide4Here To ServeVision Statement It is the vision of the Ohio Central School System that all inmates of the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will be provided the necessary academic, job training and social/emotional skills required for successful re-entry to society as effective, participating and productive citizens. Mission Statement The Ohio Department of Education under Revised Code 3313.61 formally chartered the Ohio Central School System in April 1973. This charter provides the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction with quality programming and the Ohio Central School System the authority to seek additional federal funding. The Chartered School District enables the department to provide a comprehensive, thorough education program that addresses the needs of the vastly under- educated and under-skilled inmates. These services include: Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE), GED ® , Adult High School, Apprenticeship Training, Library Services, Special Education, Career-Technical (vocational) Education, and other educational programs as directed by the needs of the inmate population.

Slide7Tablet TechnologyTablets help students learn more material faster. Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks . Tablets allow teachers to better customize student learning.  As Edyburn (2001) demonstrates, technology can be utilized through a variety of approaches to improve special education outcomes - to augment abilities, compensate for disabilities, or minimize the impact that a specific disability has on the learning process. Students with special learning needs may offer the most concrete evidence of the benefits of tablets in the classroom.  Tablets software programs and applications allow for the constant repetition and reinforcement that special education students need to make progress. The most successful teaching for individuals with special education needs involves visual, auditory and kinesthetic (tactile) learning. Until tablet technology, the kinesthetic component was absent from learning software, and from many classrooms.   Consider these points:  Tablets help students learn more material faster.  Technology-based instruction can reduce the time students take to reach a learning objective by 30-80%, according to the Federal Communications Commission (2012).  Tablets contain many technological features that cannot be found in print textbooks . Tablets give users the ability to highlight and edit text and write notes without ruining a textbook for the next user. Tablets have a search function, a backlighting option to read in low light, and a built-in dictionary.  Tablets allow teachers to better customize student learning.  There are thousands of education and tutoring applications on tablets, so teachers can tailor student learning to an individual style/personality instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Slide14Distance Learning Transitional  Educational Program (TEP) is a unique three-tier approach to transmitting transitional programming through technology to both currently incarcerated offenders preparing for release and to former offenders achieving success in the community.  Distance Learning  sites are available in 17 of the 27 prisons throughout the state.  It augments the classroom by directing faculty to expanded opportunities to reach students at any other distant learning site in the world in real time.  The varied resources place OCSS as the premier correctional distance education program in the country.
