1. OLD TESTAMENT WORSHIP By HAROLD HARSTVEDT

2. HOW DID CAIN AND ABEL WORSHIP THE LORD? GENESIS 4:3-5 3 It came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD . 4 Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat . And the LORD respected Abel and his offering, 5 But He did not respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry and his countenance fell. WHY WAS ABELS OFFERING MORE EXCELLENT? HEBREWS 11:4 4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain , through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.

3. HOW DID NOAH WORSHIP THE LORD? GENESIS 8:20-22 20 Noah built an altar to the LORD , and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar . 21 The LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. 22 "While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease."

4. HOW DID ABRAM WORSHIP THE LORD? GENESIS 12:7-8 7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the LORD , who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD .

5. HOW DID ABRAM WORSHIP THE LORD? GENESIS 13:3-4 3 Abram went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 To the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD . GENESIS 13:18 18 Then Abram moved his tent, and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the LORD .

6. WHERE DID ABRAHAM AND ISAAC GO TO WORSHIP? GENESIS 22:1-13 1 It came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, Abraham! He said, Here I am. 2 God said, Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah , and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you . 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him . 4 On the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship , and we will come back to you.

7. HOW DID ABRAHAM PREPARE FOR WORSHIP? GENESIS 22:1-13 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, My father! Abraham said, Here I am, my son. Then he said, Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 Abraham said, My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering . So the two of them went together. 9 They came to the place of which God had told him. Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order ; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood . 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

8. HOW DID THE LORD PROVIDE THE SACRIFICE ? GENESIS 22:1-13 11 The Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! Abraham said, Here I am. 12 The Angel said, Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me. 13 Abraham lifted his eyes and looked. There behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns . So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son . 14 Abraham called the name of the place, THE-LORD- WILL-PROVIDE ; as it is said to this day, In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided.

9. HOW DID ABRAHAM PLEASE THE LORD? HEBREWS 11:8-10 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going . 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 For he waited for the city which has foundations , whose builder and maker is God.

10. WHY DID JACOB BUILT AN ALTAR? GENESIS 28:16-19 16 Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the LORD is in this place , and I did not know it . 17 He was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God , and this is the gate of heaven! 18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it . 19 He called the name of that place Bethel ; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.

11. WHERE DID GOD TELL JACOB TO BUILD AN ALTAR? GENESIS 35:1-3 1 God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God , who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother. 2 Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3 Let us arise and go up to Bethel . I will make an altar there to God , who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.

12. HOW DID JACOB WORSHIP GOD AT BETHEL? GENESIS 35:7-15 7 Jacob built an altar there and called the place El Bethel , because there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother. 14 So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone ; and he poured a drink offering on it , and he poured oil on it . 15 Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel .

13. WHY WAS IDOL WORSHIP FORBIDDEN? EXODUS 20:1-5 1 God spoke all these words, saying: 2 I am the LORD your God , who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 You shall have no other gods before Me . 4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image , or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 You shall not bow down to them nor serve them . For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God , visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.

EXODUS 30:1-6 1 You shall make an altar to burn incense on ; you shall make it of acacia wood. 2 A cubit shall be its length and a cubit its width-- it shall be square-- and two cubits shall be its height. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. 3 You shall overlay its top, its sides all around, and its horns with pure gold; and you shall make for it a molding of gold all around.

17. WHY MAKE AN ALTAR TO BURN INCENSE ON? EXODUS 30:1-6 4 Two gold rings you shall make for it, under the molding on both its sides. You shall place them on its two sides, and they will be holders for the poles with which to bear it. 5 You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. 6 You shall put it before the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony , before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you .

EXODUS 34:13-17 13 You shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars , and cut down their wooden images . 14 You shall worship no other god , for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God 15 Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land , and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, 16 Lest you take of his daughters for your sons , and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods. 17 You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.
