2. Teachers play an important role in fostering the intellectual and social development of children during their formative years. The education that students acquire is key to determining the future of those students. Whether in elementary or high schools or in private or public schools, teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop into responsible adults.  Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using classroom presentations or individual instruction to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, and English.  They plan, evaluate, and assign lessons; prepare, administer, and grade tests; listen to oral presentations; and maintain classroom discipline.  Teachers observe and evaluate a student's performance and potential.  They are increasingly asked to use new assessment methods.

3. To become a teacher, individuals need to obtain a baccalaureate degree, at minimum. Public school teachers also need to be licensed or certified in the states they plan to teach.  Receive a High School Diploma  Enroll in Undergraduate College  Complete a Teacher Certification Program  Pass GACE (Georgia only) in field of study

4. Although there are no years experience required.  It is recommended that you volunteer in many schools, to determine age level and subject you want to specialize in.  You may even consider becoming a substitute teacher, to decide if this is the profession for you.

Are good at explaining things.  Keep their cool.  Have a sense of humor.  Like people, especially students in the age range in which they intend to teach.  Are inherently fair-minded.  Have "common sense."  Have a command of the content they teach.  Set high expectations for their students and hold the students to those expectations.  Are detail oriented.  Are good managers of time.  Can lead or follow, as the situation demands.  Don't take things for granted.  Have some "hard bark" on them.

Job prospects are best for teachers in high-demand fields, such as mathematics, science, and bilingual education, and in less desirable urban or rural school districts.  Employment of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers is expected to grow by 13 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations.  Job opportunities for teachers will vary with the locality, grade level, and subject taught. Most job openings will result from the need to replace the large number of teachers who are expected to retire over the 2008–18 period.

7. Median annual wages of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $47,100 to $51,180 in May 2008; the lowest 10 percent earned $30,970 to $34,280; the top 10 percent earned $75,190 to $80,970.  Teachers can boost their earnings in a number of ways. In some schools, teachers receive extra pay for coaching sports and working with students in extracurricular activities.  Getting a master's degree or national certification often results in a raise in pay, as does acting as a mentor.  Some teachers earn extra income during the summer by teaching summer school or performing other jobs in the school system.
