1. Be Obedient

2. Obedience What is Obedience? The Greek word for obey comes from the word for listening. It is about listening to those in authority. Obedience: 1. respecting authority 2. Listening to and acting on the wisdom of people who properly use authority

3. The 4th Commandment- Honour your father and mother God requires us to respect our parents and appreciate everything that they do for us. As long as they are requiring us to do something for the sake of the common good, we are to obey them and treat them with love and respect. Obedience in Families- The family is the ORIGINAL CELL OF SOCIAL LIFE. Basically, what goes on in a family shapes what goes on in society as a whole. The family is also the first teacher of the virtues of faith, hope and love. Also, Family creates the Church in the home .

4. Common Good The Common Good- refers to the fact that we desire the best for everyone. We do so by respecting human rights, freedom of conscience, social order, and conditions that help others recognize their potential.

5. Legitimate Authority Who has LEGITIMATE AUTHORITY over us? In order to answer that question, we must define legitimate authority. Legitimate Authority: 1. Serves the common good 2. Respects human dignity 3. Protects the weak

Father-ask you to complete your homework Judge-has dealt with your older brother and decides to punish you because you must be just like him Teacher-ask you to stay in at lunch to complete an assignment Police officer-arrests you for something irrelevant you tease to his son Delta Air Service (company)-Removing someone off of a plane because of their excess weight Girlfriend-Slaps you because you were talking to another girl at lunch Hockey Coach-Benches you for missing the last three practices without phoning in or having a legitimate reason Mother-decides not to let you eat super because your teacher phoned home today ***REMEMBER-Just because someone is in a position of AUTHORITY it does not mean that they are acting upon LEGITIMATE AUTHORITY type principles***

7. Obligations as Catholics. As Catholics, we are obliged to obey the precepts of the Church. These are: Attend Mass on Sundays and holy days Confess your serious sins at least once a year Receive Holy Communion at least 1/ year (East Contribute to the support of the Church Fast and Abstain: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday Keep the 2 Holy days of Obligation (Christmas, Feast of Mary)
