UW La Crosse's MycoPhyte Discovery Group: Fighting Infection in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis
paly

The MycoPhyte Discovery Group at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is an interdisciplinary initiative that combines chemistry, microbiology, and biology to collect, screen, isolate, synthesize, and screen myco-phyto crude extract to find active compounds that can fight infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. This group conducts relatively rapid and inexpensive initial bioassay and screen tests to isolate active compounds, purify, solve structure, search literature, and protect intellectual property.

8. UW-L Chemistry Microbiology Biology University of WisconsinLa Crosse MYCOPHYTE DISCOVERY GROUP What is Cystic Fibrosis? Homozygous recessive genetic disease afflicting Caucasian individuals Average lifespan of a CF patient is only 32 years Characterized by chronic bronchial infections that kill more than 90% of CF patients Antibiotic resistance in the bacteria a big problem

9. UW-L Chemistry Microbiology Biology University of WisconsinLa Crosse MYCOPHYTE DISCOVERY GROUP Screened a library of 260 fungal fruiting bodies Used disk diffusion assays for screening Target organisms were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii Best hit was against fungus labeled F10/F250 Expanded the assay to include Burkholderia cepacia and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Screening Protocol
