Prologue to the Gigabit-Ethernet

Presentation Transcript

  1. Rivier College, CS699 Professional Seminar Introduction to the Gigabit-Ethernet by Yun Qi Source :

  2. What is Gigabit Ethernet • Gigabit Ethernet is an extension to the 10 and 100 Mbps IEEE 802.3 standards. • Gigabit Ethernet is a connectionless protocol that each Ethernet frame contains a destination address, and is routed through the network.

  3. Gigabit Ethernet System Layers • Physical Layer - 1000Base-X - 1000Base-T • MAC Layer - Carrier Extension - Packet Bursting

  4. Gigabit Media Independent Interface (GMII) Gigabit Ethernet Protocol Architecture

  5. GMII (continued) • The GMII is divided into three sublayers: - PCS (Physical Coding Sublayer) - PMA (Physical Medium Attachment) - PMD (Physical Medium Dependent)

  6. Gigabit Ethernet Migration Gigabit Ethernet LAN

  7. Topologies • Upgrading server-switch connection. • Upgrading switch-switch connection. • Upgrading a fast Ethernet backbone. • Upgrading a shared FDDI backbone. • Upgrading high performance workstations.

  8. Ethernet Frame Format with Carrier Extension

  9. Packet Bursting

  10. Server-Switch Connection

  11. Upgrading Switch-Switch Connections

  12. Upgrading the Backbone

  13. Upgrading a FDDI Backbone

  14. Upgrading High Performance Workstations

  15. Summary • Advantages - Gigabit Ethernet provides high speed server access. • Disadvantages - Gigabit Ethernet lacks the ability to control QoS at the hardware level. - Gigabit Ethernet experiences inherent redundancy.
