  3. Assignment • Click here to open an excel file. This file will have some simple data. You are to take this data and make the following: • Line Graph • Bar Graph • Pie Chart

  4. Make certain that the graphs have a proper title, that the scales/headings are visibly and appropriate titled…

  5. An example can be downloaded hereand an explanation can be found on the following pages.

  6. First, highlight the data you want graphed. In this case, wewant to graph the height of each of the 10 people.After highlighting, then click the ‘chart wizard’

  7. …or, instead of click the ‘chart wizard’, one can pull downthe ‘Insert’ menu, highlight ‘chart’ and click left mousebutton

  8. You’ll now get this box…we’re just doing ‘columns’ with thissample…you can choose the type you want…after choosing, click ‘next’

  9. You’ll now have the wizard tell you what data is beingconsidered for this chart…since you already highlightedthe cells A1 to B11, the wizard automatically puts it into the data range line

  10. The next folder will ask of you a lot of details about the actual chart…the first folder, Titles, gives you an opportunity to put down thetitles…in this case, the Chart Title and the Values on the y axis

  11. When you click axes, it’s best to keep it in its default stage

  12. With gridlines, you can choose to have more pronounced linesor less lines. Default is to keep major in both…we’ll use the default of major

  13. The legend folder gives you an opportunity to select where you wantthe legend, or even if you want to eliminate the legend.By default, it’s the right…but in this case, we don’t wanta legend…so we unclick the ‘Show Legend’ box

  14. Here it is with no legend…now click the ‘data labels’ folder

  15. The ‘data label’ folder allows you to put the numeric data in the figure…by doing so one can make the figure very confusing…experiment…in most instances, one will only want the ‘value’ to be checked…in our case, we’ll leave all blank

  16. Data Table gives you the opportunity to put the data outsidethe figure…most of the time it makes it very confusing..We’ll leave ours uncheckedClick the ‘next’ button

  17. This box allows us to tell Excel where we want this chart to appear…by default it will be listed in Sheet 1…however, go to the next pageto see where we want this chart…

  18. We’ll have it go to the second sheet….now, click finish

  19. Here it is in sheet 2 of the excel file. You can enlarge itby click the outside line of the box and dragging to your desired size…

  20. You can see that this is substantially larger than the original. You can alsocopy and paste this into any other documents, such as Word or PPT

  21. You can make changes by simply click onto the area you wantchanged…for example, click around the title and you can edit it…

  22. The y axis seems a little crowded…perhaps you might want to remove someof the numbers…put the mouse over that scale and double click…you’ll get this box…go to Scale.

  23. Instead of having every 10 inches shown, change it to 20…you can also resize the fonts, number style, or alignment…we’ll keep them as they appear

  24. As you can see, the names of the people are at a slight angle…you can change the direction…for example, if you want the names to appear‘flat’, click to this point, then click OK

  25. You’ll note that you’ve lost some names..the space doesn’t allow all names to be visible. You could change the fonts,or keep them at an angle…we’ll go with the angle.

  26. Let’s say that you choose to use a line instead of a column foryour graph…going back to the first page, we’ll highlight the names and height, but this time we’ll choose the line for the charttype. Note that there are numerous types of line options…we’ll keep it simple…

  27. The same steps are followed as with the column…this time we’ll putit in sheet 3…

  28. We’ve increased the size of the chart…and we’ve highlighted the legend…by click the delete button that legend will be removed…

  29. Let’s also reduce the number of items on the y axis and have itonly list 20, 40 60, 80 and 100 inches…

  30. Make that change…continue…

  31. Opps…we forgot to put the title and the information on the ‘y axis’…first, double click the on the current title

  32. Now type in the title you want…

  33. To add or change information on the chart, pull down the‘Chart’ menu…and in this case highlight ‘Chart Options’

  34. Click the title folder and make the change (adding Height) onthe y axis…note you can move to the other folders byclicking their title…when done, click ‘ok’

  35. So there you have it. To be honest, it’s somewhat a dud of achart…that’s because there’s not a great amount of difference inheight…you can show the differences by modifying they axis data…first, double click on the y axis numbers…

OK, here are some changes…first, we’ve changed the minimum from 0 to 50…since none of these individuals are only 0 inches tall you can do that…I’ve chosen 50 only because I so desired…I could have chosen 60..Since nobody is 100 inches tall, I’ve reduced the maximum to 80…finally, the ‘major units’ are back to 10

  37. This chart now shows more detail in the differences in height…let’s change itto a minimum of 60…

  38. Let’s now take a look at a pie chart. A pie chart can be used only for certain data, and it represents a part of the ‘whole’… for our example, we’ll use the political persuasion of our 10 people. Note that all have either a democratic or republican persuasion, thus there will be a total of 10 subjects in the pie. Click the next button Note, that one also needs to total the numbers…in this case,there are five democrats and 5 republicans…

  39. Keep clicking next until you get to this option…here you can add a title…

  40. In this case, the legend is important, since it says thatthe blue are democrats and the maroon are republicans…click nextdirect this chart to Sheet 4 and then click finish…

  41. There you have it.
