  2. Holiday Safety The Holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends and to give thanks for our good fortunes. Unfortunately, the Holidays can also be a time when mishaps can and often occur. This briefing was put together to decrease your chances of being involved in a mishap. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

Holiday Safety • Holiday Decorations: • Use UL listed decorations. • Always inspect cords for fraying and loose connection. • Do not use indoor extension cords outside • Use grounded extension cords. • Use proper elevation devices. (don’t use a chair when a ladder is needed) • Do not use real candles on the tree. • If you use a real tree keep the water re-supplied and check the tree for dryness. • Place candles away from curtains or other flammables • Unplug your decorations/lights when you go to bed • Keep fire extinguisher handy 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

  7. Holiday Safety • Holiday Cooking • Turn handles on pots and pans inward on stove. • Test your fire detectors monthly. • Do not leave cooking unattended. • Do not overeat. Too much turkey can cause you to sleep thru the football games. • Do not leave foods that require refrigeration out for too long of a period (spoiled foods). 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

Holiday Safety • Celebrations • Take your role and host seriously. • Ensure Designated Drivers are available. • Offer a place to stay. • Provide plenty of food so the guest will not drink as much. • Don’t push drinks. • Use caution for smokers and loose ashes. • Ladies WATCH YOUR DRINKS! • Avoid celebrations that include illegal substances. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

Holiday Safety • Water Safety • High Surf Conditions are the norm in winter in Hawaii USE CAUTION. • Heed the warning signs placed on the beaches. • Always use the buddy system when swimming, diving surfing or kayaking. • Keep your eye on small children. Do not let them play alone in the water. • Don’t drink alcohol before swimming. • Check for obstacles (submerged rocks or shallow water) before you dive into unknown waters. • Only SCUBA with certified divers. Do not attempt to dive if you are not certified unless you are undergoing training and are accompanied by an instructor. Use only approved equipment. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

There is safety in numbers. • Be alert, stay in well light areas • If you carry a purse, keep it in front of your body and close to you. • Carry your keys in your pocket. If they get your purse they might have your address but not the keys to your house and car. • Dress casually: Thieves and pickpockets are attracted to expensive clothes and jewelry. • Don’t flash large amounts of cash. • Lock your car and don’t leave anything in plain sight. • Avoid parking next to vans where thieves can hide. • Check your car for invited guest prior to getting in. • Don’t over burden yourself with packages • Beach • Many of the same tips as above. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

Holiday Safety • TOY BUYING SAFETY • Select Toys to suit age, abilities, skills & the child’s interest • For infants & toddlers avoid toys with small parts (choking) • Don’t buy electric toys with heating elements for kids under 8 • Read the label and use the age guidelines for that toy • Look for sturdy construction and tightly secured small parts • Discard plastic wrappings immediately (suffocation hazard) • Call CSPC hotline 800-638-2772 to report dangerous toys • Check CSPC recall list on the internet http://www.cpsc.gov 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

(avoid using Military ID overseas) • Don’t leave bags unattended or carry one for strangers. • Keep carry-on luggage light & store under the seat in front of you. • Watch for heavy items stored over your head. • Pack any medicines or dietary needs in your carry-on bag. • Dress for the climate you are going to. • Wear loose fitting natural fiber clothes, avoid synthetics. • Wear long pants & sleeves and low healed leather or tennis shoes. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class

(count rows) • Wear your seatbelt and keep it on even if the light is out. 68th Med Co Christmas Safety Class
